The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is not in a rush to fill the post of secretary with Jay Shah assuming the charge of ICC chairman on December 1. In the BCCI Apex Council Meeting, slated for September 25, Jay Shah’s replacement is not even on the agenda. This will be the last Apex Council Meeting before the Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Sep 29 in Bengaluru.

Jay Shah to continue

Even though the BCCI will have an opportunity to elect the next secretary at the Sep 29 AGM, Jay Shah will continue for two more months. As per a PTI report, even a discussion on the nominees won’t be part of the Apex Council Meeting.

As Jay Shah was elected unanimously for the ICC chairman position last month, the position of BCCI secretary will be vacant from December 1. However, Shah is not stepping down as yet. Instead, BCCI will call a Special General Meeting sometime in November or December to elect the new secretary.

BCCI vs Byju’s

The Indian board has dragged ed-tech firm Byju’s to the tribunal for non-payment of dues. Byju’s signed a huge $55-million deal with the BCCI for jersey sponsorship in March 2019 for three years. It was later extended to four years. However, battling multiple issues, the company failed to make payments after September 2022.

But in July, BCCI informed the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLT) that it had reached a settlement agreement with Byju’s. As per the agreement, BCCI would have received Rs 158 crore by Aug 8.

However, the Supreme Court issued a stay order on the NCLT settlement agreement between Byju’s and the BCCI. It came after Byju’s US lender GLAS Trust Co LLC opposed the agreement.
